Evaluation of Land Suitability for Crop Production in Northern Ghana Using GIS and AHP Based Techniques

In this study, a land suitability index for crop production in three northern regions of Ghana is spatially generated using analysis through the integration AHP and GIS. The study further exploited actual maize groundnut yield obtained by farmers area integrating it with to generate potential ground yield. yields were overlayed GIS produce losses groundnuts. Factors precipitation, slope land, LULC, soil erosion, OM type identified expert opinion literature, assigned weights analysis. Results from indicates about 19.2 % highly suitable production, 20.8 moderately suitable, 27.0 less 33 unsuitable due settlements depleted lands. Potential loss difference groundnuts 70 63 respectively Northern Region, 83 66 North-East then 59 Savannah Region. GIS-based techniques are potentials effective tools determining thereby enhancing sustainable agricultural development food security creation new jobs.
